Kylu, the baby beluga whale
On the 15th of November 2016, there was a milestone in the history of Oceanogràfic: the birth of Kylu, the first baby beluga whale born in Europe.
After 502 days of pregnancy, Yulka, the 20 year old female at Oceanogràfic, gave birth to Kylu, weighing 74kg and measuring 160cm.
After many months of attention and care, Kylo has not only become another member of the Oceanogràfic family, but has also been a key piece for the development of different research programmes which could not have been carried out without him.
Researchers, doctoral students and vets, in some cases from other countries, assisted by members of the Oceanogràfic Foundation and also by the University of Valencia and Autonomous University of Barcelona, have carried out studies related with the breathing system of beluga whales, their vascular system, vocal and hearing development, and finally, their immune system; as a whole, exceptional work in marine research.
